The saga of Ghost Recon tactical action returns to the fray with this release that presents a fresh gaming experience with a strong bias for action, without entirely losing its tactical component. The game features single player modes, cooperative and competitive multiplayer

The Ghost team is fighting a secret war in Ghost Recon Future Soldier, the new military shooter coming to PS3 and Xbox 360 with the seal of approval from Tom Clancy. Find out in our review how the soldiers do in this new modern warfare game.

Shoot’em games up based on modern war receive a further boost with Ghost Recon Future Soldier. With this analysis we will discover what is at hand in the next installment in the saga created by Tom Clancy, that arrives on PS3 and Xbox 360 in a time when competition is fierce within shooters (and will be even more after the summer , when Black Ops 2 Call of Duty and Medal of Honor II Warfighter reach the battlefield). Its development has been long, because it has lasted three years, but it seems that the work done has paid off.

The starting point is a real basis: the twenty-first century theater of war has taken a radical turn. Wars are no longer decided by increased deployment of troops or by indiscriminate bombing, but by special operations teams able to solve missions with surgical precision. The Ghost Recon are one such group, specialized in infiltrating enemy territory with the help of modern devices such as optical camouflage system, reconnaissance drones or magnetic vision systems.

A global war with small-scale missions

In the game, each of these supports results in additional mechanical addition to the third-person shooter. Instead of massive battles, they instead decided to go with 12 varied operations in which we have to rescue hostages, kill warlord in a refugee camp or blow up an enemy base. The campaign exceeds 10 hours, and this is not mentioning the multiplayer modes that I will discuss below.

The story is one of the weaknesses of Future Soldier. While the technology that is in the game and the behavior of soldiers is typically solid (as is the case i a game that bears the stamp of Tom Clancy) the narrative is conventional, and is limited to some videos that are rather weak, with little cohesion and generic characters . Surprising only the beginning of the game, along with some type QTE moments in which we only point and shoot without having full control over our soldiers.

You build your own weapons

The arsenal has been taken care of by including a Gunsmith mode, compatible with Kinect on Xbox 360. Not only can we change the optical aspects of our guns or paint our guns, but we have access to internal parts (such as exhaust gas, trigger ..) for configuring million different weapons and test them in a gallery. It takes time, but it’s fun. And we can do it from a tablet or iPhone.

The setting, in the near future, benefits from ingenious visual aids that mimic the augmented realities, and have evolved from what we saw in the latest installment of Splinter Cell. The construction of scenarios is very elegant as is the lighting and physics, but the faces of the characters are a little “pixelated”. To compensate, our ghost is well animated, and moves between coverage in a fluid and intuitive matter.

The Ghost unit is deployed in multiplayer

The multiplayer modes take advantage of these options that we have spoken. Four players can join forces in a cooperative campaign mode or battle wave of guerrillas, which is inspired by the training programs of the special forces. In addition, 6 vs. 6 online battles move away from the frantic firefights of Call of Duty and have a more tactical feel.

For this occasion, by objective, we can choose our soldier among three different classes (gunner, engineer and explorer) and get to improve their equipment as we gain experience. Most striking is that a good shot is not as important as camouflage, detect enemy positions or pin them with cover fire. Ghost Recon allows us to place markers on the map for all of our allies and provides bonuses when we work together to achieve a goal.

Future Soldier flees from the “simple” approach found in many of these types of games and puts us in a theater of war that seems very real, that before taking a step we have to recognize the ground, and have to move with stealth and coordinate progress with our partners. Maybe not as spectacular as other war games, but we appreciated this innovative development. The multiplayer mode and Gunsmith mode complete this title and make it more solid overall.

Conclusions

While retaining the essence of a military shooter, Future Soldier offers a new perspective that is closer to an infiltration type of game. Furthermore, the use of combat drones, camouflage and to ensure coordinated actions adds variety during the campaign.
The Good: The use of new technologies adds variety. Gunsmith mode shows us how to modify our weapons arsenal.
The Bad: Not as spectacular as other war games. Sometimes lacks the freedom to change strategy.
