The video game maker Electronic Arts announced that Battlefield premium will cost you $50 annually. The idea is to drive sales via the Internet and gain ground against its major rival, Activision Blizzard, which sells Call of Duty
Activision filed its own gaming platform last year, Call of Duty Elite Premium, which offers extra content online for $60 per year.
Unlike Activision, which charges a monthly fee for their service, Battlefield Premium will ask its users to pay in advance.
Charging for online play is becoming more popular as companies seek to generate a stable revenue stream independent of record sales after the launch of a great game a few times a year and make as much money as possible in their successes.
Battlefield 3 sold over 15 million units since its release last year, becoming one of the games quickly sold by the company.
EA, which recently made a big bet with one of the most expensive games in its history, Star Wars: The Old Republic, saw its shares lose 36% since Jan. 1. The firm said the latest quarter they have lost 400,000 players of Star Wars.
Guests paying the fee of $50 online have special privileges, including the ability to delete their game statistics, as well as special in games items such as name plates and knives. Players who purchase the service for their PlayStation 3 console can test new parts of the game two weeks earlier than non-members.
EA has always been aggressive about selling more content for their games on the internet. Last year it generated $1200 million in profits and said its digital online business could help expand their margins this year.
But making fans pay more for games in business can be a trap. The gamer blogs increased their criticism when Activision announced the launch of its online platform last year.
The executive vice president of EA Games, Patrick Soderlund, said that despite the high price, the online platform offered to players will feature a discount as access to content in a group package that would cost you $25 more if purchased separately .
Soderlund also said the offer would maintain the momentum of the Battlefield franchise, which will have a new full game but we have to wait till at least 2013.
